Scaling and Root Planing

     
  • Removes plaque and calculus (tartar) from teeth
  • Smoothes root surfaces
  • May be the only gum disease treatment needed or may be done

Many patients prefer to be sedated for their periodontal work.
Dr. Flynn offers these options:
  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
  • Oral sedation (enteral sedation)
  • IV sedation
Surgery for Bone Regeneration Back to top  
A main goal of periodontal therapy is to restore the lost bone around the teeth.
During this procedure, your periodontist folds back the gum tissue to gain access to then place:
 
1. Bone replacement grafts using
  • Your own bone if available
  • Synthetic bone filler particles
  • Human freeze-dried bone particles from a tissue bank
  • 2. Biological modifiers such as:
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) - growth factors from your own blood
  • Emdogain - an amelogenin containing protein gel
  • GEM21S - recombinant growth factors (available soon)
  • 3. Collagen and other barriers for guided tissue regeneration or to
         contain bone grafts

  • Crown Lengthening is a surgical procedure to expose more tooth surface
    so your dentist can put a crown or filling on your tooth.
  • Esthetic
  • In some cases, a patient has too much gum showing. Dr. Flynn can trim the
    gums to show more of the teeth.

    Periodontal procedures are available to stop or reverse gum recession, improve
    the esthetics of your gum line, or reduce tooth sensitivity.
    Dr. Flynn offers:
    • Connective tissue graft - using your own gum tissue
    • Free gingival graft - using your own gum tissue
    • Soft tissue allograft - using Alloderm ®, freeze-dried acellular
          dermal matrix instead of your own gum tissue

    Titanium fixtures to replace the roots of missing teeth
    • Can be used to replace single teeth
    • Can be used to hold in dentures
    • Can replace multiple teeth
    • Dr. Flynn will work with your general dentist or a prosthodontist who puts the
          crown, bridge or denture on the implants
