What is a frenectomy?

A frenectomy is the surgical treatment to remove a frenum from your mouth. In the mouth, there is a frenum inside your upper and lower lips, under your tongue and between your cheeks and gums.

Dr. Monica A. Flynn incorporates both traditional and laser assisted techniques when performing the following frenectomies:

  • Maxillary Frenectomy – the removal of the frenum inside the upper lip
  • Mandibular Frenectomy – the removal of the frenum inside the lower lip
  • Lingual Frenectomy – the removal of the frenum under the tongue

An orthodontist might refer you for a maxillary or mandibular frenectomy procedure to prevent spaces between teeth opening up. It can be performed before, during or after orthodontic treatment.

A general dentist might refer you for a maxillary or mandibular frenectomy to prevent tension on receding gums or to help keep dentures from coming loose.

A general dentist or speech therapist might refer you for a lingual frenectomy. This procedure loosens the attachment of the tongue from the floor of the mouth. Some indications for this procedure are problems with speech, swallowing or head and neck pain.

Many surgical procedures require a few short healing check visits so Dr. Monica A. Flynn can monitor the patient’s healing. There is never a charge for these healing visits.
